The Medical Centre offers a clinic dedicated to Women’s Health issues.
Please book an appointment to discuss the following:
- discussion about contraceptive methods, including pills, implants, coils and injections
- problems with contraception
- coil insertion and removal
- implant insertion and removal
- genital prolapse and change or insertion of ring pessary
- swabs
- continence issues
- vulval discomfort
- vaginal discharge
- menopause related issues
- period problems
Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:
- Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
- Insurance claim forms
- Private sick notes
The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
Nurse led service for acute medical problems
We have five Advanced Nurse Practitioners at the practice who are all registered nurses who have undergone advanced level training to diagnose, treat and prescribe for a wide range of medical conditions and ailments. They typically see patients of all ages with many different medical complaints. They have a vast amount of knowledge and experience of general practice and will be delighted to welcome you to their clinic. Please ask at Reception for more details.
We also have a designated home visiting Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
Examples of conditions treated in the Acute Illness Clinic:
- Acute diarrhoea and vomiting, diarrhoea and/or vomiting in adult without abdominal pain, diarrhoea and/or vomiting in children
- Animal bites
- Bites/stings
- Boils/infected cysts
- Children with temperatures
- Coughs
- Croup
- Earache / ear discharge / blocked ears
- Haemorrhoids
- Infected fingers/toes
- ‘Lumps and Bumps’ including neck lumps
- Minor injuries
- Nail problems including ingrowing toe nails
- NEW ONSET muscle or joint problems, including NEW ONSET back pain
- One swollen leg
- Pneumonia/Chest infections/bronchitis/bronchitis in children
- Red eye/eye infection
- Respiratory conditions – Acute exacerbations/’flares’ of asthma and COPD
- Sinusitis
- Skin and nail infections including cellulitis and erysipelas
- Skin problems/rashes/moles/legions/acne
- Sore throat
- Thrush (oral and vaginal)
- Urine infection/cystitis
- Vaginal discharge

Our receptionists will ask for brief details of your condition to ensure that your ailment can be managed by this team.
Please note that for travel advice, dressings and ear irrigation an appointment with the treatment room nursing team is required.
If you suspect you may have a urinary tract infection and are a female aged 16 years or more, please bring a urine sample to your appointment – sample containers can be purchased from Reception.

Blood tests for most conditions are now only be available at the Princess Royal Hospital outpatient phlebotomy department or at a Community Diagnostic Centre rather than here at Shawbirch Medical Centre.
Blood tests are routinely taken at Shawbirch Medical Centre for:
- patients on warfarin, or
- patients on drugs which require specific monitoring, such as methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide, lithium, azathioprine, or
- patients on chemotherapy.
If you are unsure whether you are eligible for blood tests at the practice, please discuss with a receptionist who may get advice from a GP.
If you are eligible for a blood test at the medical centre, please make an appointment with our healthcare assistants.
Appointments for adult blood tests at the Princess Royal Hospital or Community Diagnostic Centre can be made by booking online or calling 01743 492510.
Blood tests for children must be booked by calling 01743 450855.
For a fasting test you need to eat and drink nothing but water for 10 hours before the test.

The Medical Centre offers a clinic specifically designed to address contraceptive and sexual health issues. Dr Clare McDermott (GP), Dr Nicky Warner (GP) and Mrs Teresa Wild (Advanced Nurse Practitioner) offer speciality appointments for Women’s health, Contraception (including coils and implants) and Sexual Health. Please ask our reception team if you would like an appointment for any of these issues.
We have a community midwife permanently attached to the surgery allowing us to share your antenatal care.
All the doctors and minor ailment nurses in the practice offer routine care of children.
Practice nurses provide childhood vaccinations in line with the NHS Vaccination Schedule.
We work in conjunction with the Telford and Wrekin Health Visitor Team and the School Nursing Team, to promote and supports the health and wellbeing of all children and young people.
Specific Mental Health support is available to children and young people living in Telford and Wrekin. This includes online mental health support via Kooth, and wellbeing drop in sessions via BEAM.
